Dunno how you are going to convince them if they can't see how _dumb_ that is, but version numbers generally are used as:

xx.yy.zzzzz

xx = Major revision number. Functionality, look-and-feel, or UI has been dramatically changed.
yy = Minor revision number. Incremental additions or changes.
zzz = Patches, bugfixs.
