can comment lines ... lines starting with an * end in a semicolon?

*IF ALLTRIM(UPPER(lTemp.lsubdivsn)) <> "PRIN/INT PAYMENT" AND ;

i had the above line before an IF ENDIF statment and it i got the missing if, else, or endif message box.
