Just a follow-up:

The method was being invoked from a toolbar. I changed the call to the method which produces the report from the toolbar to a button on the form.

Voila, all problems cleared up.

Apparently when the toolbar called a method of the form, screwy things were happening with the datasession. C'est la Vfp.
