I think you've got to futz with the registry too. The install left the original template file behind (in Windows\ShellNew\), but blew away the registry key. There was was no option on the New menu.

Perhaps I'm mis-understanding. Are you saying that changing the extension of the template 'txt' document will cause Windows to automatically make the adjustment? Or are you saying something else?
