Oops, I shouldn't have used the word "reindex" because that implies use of the REINDEX command which our application doesn't use. We have tables defining all our index tags and code that does DELETE TAG ALL before recreating the CDX's as you've suggested. My concern was how to get people out of the application gracefully, and it sounds like I just need to roll up my sleeves and write some code. Isn't that the way it always works? (g)
