I just want to add:
If you are using Oracle 8 or better you can use varchar2(4000) as memo fields which could solve your problem.
However,you are limited to 4000 characters in a memo field which may for you be OK.

I hjave tested every Oracle ODBC driver and they only version that worked perfvectly was...
Version 8.0.6.1.0 for Net 8 Client 8.0.6.0.0 (ODBC Version 3.51)
