I'm trying to apply the filter directly to the data, as you can in Fox (Select X, Set Filter to ...). In Access I've only been able to tie data to a form or report and then specify a filter on that form or report. What if I want to have data from several tables without creating a SQL?

Thanks for the offer. I'll send it to you so you have a better idea what I'm trying to do (it is 721 kb zipped. Let me know if that is too big).

Access 97 specifically, state of the world generally.
