"with similar results" - yes recycling still contributes to pollution, but to a considerably reduced extent. In addition to the environmental issues, there is also a minor economic argument in favour of recycling, admitedly this relies to a large extent on goodwill.
When it comes to cars, you Americans are living in dream land (I should say carmageddon). Society has finally realised that the true cost of nuclear power has to include decommission costs and the costs of "very" long term storage of waste. If the cost of gasoline included peripheral costs (like medication for the near epidemic increase in numbers of asthma sufferers - particularly amongst children), then the vast majority would not be driving cars.
