>>We're trying to have the server assign environment variables to Win98 machines as they log in. It is no problems on a windows 2000 workstation.

>You want to do this in the Login Script of the W2k server, sort of like you would have done on your Novell server. The script is set up on the server and assigned to the users that you want to have it. The script will then run for the user no matter where they sign on, W2k, Win98 or Win95.

Absolutely! You can also use a WSH script as a part of the login process, and this can access the registry, ADSI details, WMI details and use them to set environment strings. You can do the same thing in the AUTOEXEC.BAT, but that runs before the Windows Login, where the information such as user id and the like are established.

The Win32 Scripting Journal (see my sig block for URL) has extensive coverage of all scripting and batch processing topics; I subscribe (it costs $99/year) not only to get the current issues, but also to be able to access their entire back issue library including source. The articles cover a very wide range of topics, many of which are easily adapted to use the many COM objects in VFP apps, and serve as guidelines for using scripting to handle installation, update and network deployment and administration. I find it an invaluable resource - I have yet to pick up an issue where I haven't learned something, and the authors are really top-notch - people like Dino Esposito, Bob Wells, and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris are regular contributors. It's part of the Windows 2000 Magazine family of publications.
