When it comes up, pick Tools/Options, the Preferences tab, and uncheck the box for appearing on the taskbar. it will not appear on either the systray or taskbar. It is still usable even if not on the taskbar or systray from the Start/Programs menu.

I would not be adamant about removing it - if there's a microphone and speakers on the PC, and a full-time Internet connection, you can make long-distance calls through it through the Internet, and if you have other people also using the Messenger, it's an alternative to ICQ (fewer features, but it isn't tied into AOHell, either). It works reliably through ICS, NAT and the WinGate Pro Proxy on port 1080.
