What do you mean, "need"? I know of no requirement to update multiple tables just because they are in a joined view. You can update just one (or none) if you so choose.

It was a hypo. In reality however, a client ran into this very problem. The RV was composed of 3 inner joins. The view needed to update 2 tables. They ran into RI problems and with problems dealing with nulls. Further, error trapping was a real problem. We solved this problem via dataclas and stored procedures.

Would it have been impossible to do it with RV's? I suppose not since one could not conclude that every possibility was tried. Then again, from a cost perspective, it would have been a very expensive way to go.

I do have clients who demand SP- mainly against Oracle, though. But in response to your point: one might equally say, "the client may demand that you use Cache". Your answer to that was "I don't know about Cache and have never heard of it". Perhaps I should reply "I don't know about SP and have never heard of it" as if that supports my position. < bg >

Comparing SP's to a product is not an accurate analogy. SQL to Oracle is. SQL to Cache is. SP's are a feature of each. At least, I gather from what you are saying that Cache as SP abilities.

As far as new tools go, more than once a client has spent money on me to learn a new tool. It makes sense if I have knowledge of their business and the application. I have no reservations about a DB backend. If the client want's to use it, and it is a decent tool, I would take the time to learn and implement the tool for them.

Apart from that, I don't understand where else the analaogy can go. As for the specfics of Cache, that is off-topic...

The rest of your post strays too far off-topic. Again, the topic relates the pros and cons of RV's v. SP's. My record is clear on this issue. And with that, I think we have completed our discussion.
