How about remote automation or DCOM?. Make the server app a COM server, that means, that another application can create an instance of a specified class in an EXE and use its Methods and Properties. So, the communication will be through a custom class (flagged as OLE Public).

Then, you can setup Remote Automation between them (look at Chapter 16 in the programmers guide).
