Several years ago I had a "similar" problem (but no need for graphical representation) for a small manufacturer - he would buy odd containers of clear cedar and the program(s) had to consider the raw content of the container (x boards of 2x4x12, y boards of 2x2x8, etc.) *AND* the orders on hand (each order came down to item codes and each item code had a list of pieces required to make it) to TELL THE USER THE *OPTIMUM* cutting/trimming for all lumber in the container.
It was actually a lot of fun to do. It took about 6 programs to get the basic job done.
If I had this problem I would certainly leave the graphical part of the work 'till the end. I would hazard a guess that you will end up with 6-8 programs too.
