Transient Windows Setup message after SP4 install

I recently installed the VS6 SP4 upgrade (subset for VFP users), and it has caused a transient Windows 95 Setup dialog to appear whenever I restart Windows. The message says something like "Windows is now setting up the following items:", but it lists nothing and goes away while Windows finishes initializing the desktop. I haven't tested out this upgrade exhaustively, but it seems otherwise OK. VFP's About... dialog confirms that I'm now using SP4. My concern is that this could be a symptom of some lurking problem with a faulty installation. I've seen these dialogs before, after installing things that need to take further action after rebooting, but I've never seen it list nothing and persistently come back as in this case.

Has anyone else ever seen such behavior? Is there any easy way to see if the SP4 install was completely successful? Here are my options, as I see it:

1. ignore the message until clear evidence of a screwed up installation shows up
2. re-install the SP4 upgrade, without uninstalling anything first
3. un-install VS6, re-install it, re-install SP4
4. even nastier options

Environment details: I'm running on a Pentium with 64MB under Windows 95B. I was previously using VS6 SP3, with no sign of problems. Per instructions for SP4, I upgraded from MDAC 2.1 to MDAC 2.5 just prior to the SP4 installation. There was no sign of any problems with the MDAC 2.5 step. Ample disk space was available during these installations. I use a non-standard directory for VS6 (D:\VS6 instead of C:\Program Files\...), but there's no indication that anything failed to find it. Both the MDAC 2.5 and SP4 installations ran to completion, including subsequent rebooting, with no error messages.

I'd appreciate any advice about how to proceed, preferably with minimum reinstallation hassles.
