Hey Joe...

The idea of something being "self-evident" or "supported by previous posts" is very subjective. I often have questions about things that other people find obvious because they have dealt with it. But I need to ask questions to learn.

Right, which is why I said "due to my sense that". I agree it's subjective... but, see point B above.

I don't think any question is a bad one when it is asked constructively and with an open mind.

But after an entire thread has already been dealing with it?

Sure, some of Erik's "whys" were a bit stubborn, but never degrading to other posters or dismissive of salient facts. As for "why use a primary key" or "why use a table", heck, I have seen plenty of discussions about such things, and I think they are good! Some people have very good reasons for not using such things, or putting twists on the old stand-bys. I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing these "self-evident" issues.

You have a point. From one perspective, yes, question everything, discuss everything reevaluate everything. Break rules, I do it all the time! But, here's the other point: there's a point where certain programming practices need to accepted as meaningful and good in order to move on.... every high level argument rests on some assumptions. Otherwise, why not just respond to every post with "sure that will work, but only if we live in a Euclidean universe"

My reaction was due to MY SENSE that the SPT approach is more desirable and easier to sell for enterprise systems. To me, this is as obvious as the reasoning behind primary keys. And, as with primary keys, there may be reasons to break both sets of rules. Note the use of MY SENSE.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts. - Bertrand Russell
