6 SP3, works in Win2000, Win NT, Win98...
We made automation service using VFP that runs in background mode and handles some operations (like nightly reindexing and packing of tables). It uses 3 timers, al are in diferent places (1 is in form added in design time, 1 created in run-time as free object, 1 added in run-time to the custom object). All timers work ok without any tricks you mentioned.
