This whole thread has reminded me of the hue and cry that went up over DoubleSpace in DOS 6.0. It was generally accepted that it was buggy because that was what was reported in the press. However, the fact of the matter was that it was both stable and safe. Many of the so-called bugs could not be replicated even on machines with identical configurations, the rest were because of misuse by the user. This fact generally went unreported (see any similarities between this and the "no more VFP" rumors?). I used it (and am on an older machine) since it came out and never lost one byte. Of course, I always issued SMARTDRV/C prior to turning the machine off to flush the buffer. Microsoft had documented the need to do this beginning at least with DOS 5.0.

Simply put, it makes no sense for MS or any other vendor to intentionally release buggy software.
