I've got to absolutely agree with you when the subject is selecting or updating information in similar ways repeatedly. When "odd ball" situations arise or where there are too many permutations to pre-code, I tend to use the flexibility of SQL pass through. When it comes to editing/updating single records (with or without dependant child records) however, I find updateable remote views easier to deal with.
