I don't know the answer to your first question but I have run into the problems you are having returning a result set via a stored procedure. I have not found anybody that can tell me an easier way to do this. It is a major inconvenience that I did not run into with SQL Server. I finally gave up on trying to do this and now user SQL PASSTHROUGH to return a result set.

Another option is to use Oracle's OO4O tools rather than ODBC. I haven't had time to learn this yet though so won't be much help in that area.
