If you're on Windows 95, I think you can look in the registry for:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Application\Microsoft Excel Application

I'm not very sure if this is the key you should look for.

There's an utility for registry handling in the Files section. It's very good and it also includes a good example on how to use it.
