I was somewhat suprised with the performance statement because I thought Rushmore would kick in if there was an index on the specified field. Anyway, I tested both versions with 20,000 and 100,000 (with 2% of records deleted) and the performance was insignificant. I don't know how to explain why performance vary on your system.
