I'm afraid, I can not completely understand your problem. First of all, is it possible for you to upgrade to VFP6.0 SP4?
Public variables are not a good programing design in general. It's much better to use form's property instead. You can create a new property for your form vLocation.

Could you check this thread Coding, syntax & commands Re: Validate the existing record with controlsource Thread #435090 (autolink should work for you, I hope) for some ideas about validation?
