I am currently reverse-engineering a SQL database system and want to do things such as save a description note on each field of each table and print a glossary type report -- very simple. I think the data diagram for my ER could be created and printed from SEM (but, if their are more advantages from another product like ERWIN, I am interested.) Also, I used to do Data Flow models in AllClear but it did not do everything I wanted.

My wish list tool is one that takes the full cycle on the discovery, design, implementation, support phases of development using automation to eliminate the redundancy and a maintenance nightmare since requirements change and new discovers may make documentation in need of changes. I also would like to create data flow diagrams that I can easily drill down on the different parts to more detail (for example: being able to drill down on an object that says "EDI Proposal" and it will acess the form that I have previously scanned into a file during the discovery phase or drill down on a process that says "Update Archive Data" and see the code for the stored procedure or another more detail data flow.) I want the ability to outline and model the system so that all the information from the business level to the programming level is right at my fingertips via models that can be drill down upon.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, reverse engineering of the above project is very tedious and discoveries are being made and need to be documented, but I'd rather invest in a tool (system) that does it right, than waste my time creating my own tools that would end up being far inferior to something I could buy. I'm looking for my systems to be well-documented so that maintenance, enhancements, and re-writes can be done most efficiently.

Does ERWIN do the above types of things?

Thank you
