I am developing a large web application and have been using I.E. 5 for testing and development. I.E. 4.0 will not work properly as I am using technology that was introduced earlier this year. I have no problem with that as I am using features available with I.E. 5.

Just installed I.E. 5.5 on another machine and some of the functionality of the app is not available. I thought Microsoft products were known for being "backward compatible?

Once I discover the “why” I will be able to test the rest of the app. This problem has been confirmed with several machines using I.E. 5.5. At this time I am most concerned about backward compatibility and not the specific reason for the problem.

The specific problem is form objects not changing state (read only or disabled) when they should. I am using INCLUDE files for Toolbars, etc. To edit data the user must press the Edit command button that fires a procedure and enables the required objects. When pressing Edit nothing happens so at least I know where to look. All form navigation functions work fine.

Has anyone else had an incompatibility issue with I.E 5 and 5.5 browsers? The thought that only I.E. browsers will work with web applications that have any degree of complexity is acceptable to me. Better to have something that works than nothing. Now are we looking at web applications being I.E. version specific?

This gives the term “I am having a Browser experience”! a whole new meaning!
