I was taught these were called "associative entities"...they look like normal entities in an ERD, except have a diamond inscribed in them. Damn, it was a fine summer of data modelling where I learned all about that with some fellows from Ernst & Young...learned tons. Hope this helps!

BTW, different modelling programs and methodologies probably call it something different. When I was working in VAX/DBMS before the above project, they were called "junctions".
