If you are building a client-server system, VFP too needs to use a viaduct into the back-end.... either ADO or ODBC. For client-server work, both languages need to transmit instructions through a specialized layer that translates database instructions. There are differences once you get the datasets over to the client (or middle) layer, of course....
There are many issues to consider, but this particular one shouldn't be a deciding factor. Don't let it distract from large architectural issues.
