I didn't set it up, but a client of mine uses Samba on Linux as their backend of choice (they eliminated WinNT). Initially there were some locking issues but not anymore. They have contracted with EDS for support; EDS's support techs do most of their work remotely over the Internet.

They have a FPD2.5 app, a VFP5 recompile of that app, and various native VFP5 apps running (simultaneously) against common free tables on one of the Linux/Samba servers. They all run fine.
