I need to start off from a nice fresh installation of Windows 98 but I don't want to go chasing around looking for driver disks and then having to find all the updates they will require on the net.

I am hoping to buy an external USB 30 gig drive and back up my entire hard disk to it.

My question is where does windows keep all of its driver information and will I be able to use the drivers that now live on my backup disk.

I don't want the drivers to live on the back up disk so they will have to be transferred to my drive C:

If windows should ask me for the location of a driver will I be able to point it at some location on my backup disk and have it pick the driver there.

If so will it always want to find the driver their or will it make a copy of the driver to somewhere on my drive C:

Are there any pitfalls people can spot in what I am planning.

Many Thanks
