As one who's always voted on machines, I'm also fascinated by how many places seem to be using some kind of paper ballot and by the fact that, in this case, if you'd made a mistake, you were SOL. (Can someone who has voted with punch-out paper ballots tell us whether, in fact, you can get another if you screw up?)

Yes, a Palm Beach woman was interviewed who realized she made a mistake and punched for both Buchanan and Gore. She spoke up and was given a second ballot. She also mentioned that she talked to somewhere along the lines of 70-80 people who also realized their error while still in the polling area but were too embarrassed to admit it.
