>This scenario is a concern to me. Personally ( note IMO ) I would like to see polls voluntarily discontinued some period before election day, and no results publicly posted until after all polls have closed. Now I realize that this would fly all over some people and I understand that. But I would like to see the best chance for people to be motivated to cast their vote and cast it in good faith having made the best decision they can based on factual information regarding the candidates and issues and not be swayed by public opinion polls which may, or may not, be accurate.

Even though it is cerainly unconstitutional to force this, I agree that it would be a good thing. The coverage on the past several elections has focused on the polls and not on issues. Ralph Nadar to the contrary, there are substantial differences between Bush and Gore but the constant focus on the "who's winning" has taken all the time away from the TV (and to some extent print media) coverage of "what are they saying."
