>>PMFJI, but here is some more news: just saw Pat Buchanan himself enter the fray, live on CNN. He is actually saying flat-out those Palm Beach votes were not meant for him.

>I heard that also, but he has absolutely no way of knowing that. Neither does anyone else except those who cast that ballots, but even that is questionable. I think the don't ask, don't tell Clintonism applies here. If you did not ask for help or clarification when you were voitng then forever hold your peace. I am not responsibile for your [the voters, not you personally, Bruce] timidity or stupidity.

All right -- but what about the (mostly black) areas where Florida Police Cars line the roads and ticket those trying to drive to the polls. Or the areas where clerks (falsely) told long term voters that they had been struck off the registration list as deceased. And these complaints were made right away, as soon as the voters returned to their homes.

Given that last I looked Gore was behind by less than 360 votes, with four counties yet to go. I would say this is an argument for a recount. http://www.foxnews.com/ seems to update these numbers the most often.

Even the Butterfly ballot has more arguments that you would think. As programmers, we are in part in the usablity business. We know damn well that we can (hopefully by accident) design an interface that makes it quite easy to make "careless" errors. Quite often the easiest way to do this is to design an inteface similar to the one that someone is used to -- and REVERSE EXACTLY the normal order of some common operation. And a high percentage of those voting complained AT THE TIME. Quite a few went to the election officals, asked if they had voted correctly and were told that the election officials could not determine this. There is at least one case of a woman who had spoiled her ballot, asked the precinct worker for a replacement and was refused.
Thanks
