Evan,

>I disagree with you. The purpose of the election is to choose a president that more people in the US want than any other single person.

Correction. The purpose of the election is to elect a president according to the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution rules on this point, not what the most people want.

>The purpose of the election is not to honor an ancient and broken system.

If the Constitution is an ancient and broken system, it can be changed by Amendments approved by 2/3 of Congress and 2/3 of the state legislatures. So far that has not happened related to the Electoral College system. Perhaps that will be done for future elections, but it will be difficult to convince the smaller states to agree, once all the issues are considered.

>If a process is broken then its results are meaningless and should be discarded.

Nope. The results are just a meaningful as all previous US elections for President, since the procedures set forth in the Constitution are being followed. Do you contend that the system is broken and the results meaningless even if the same candidate wins both the Electoral and Popular vote, or just in the case where it is split?

Adherence to the rule of law (and respect for the Constitution) are not very popular with those who want to be able to just do whatever "seems right" in any given situation, but the candidates knew what the rules were going in. Unfortunately, many of the uneducated voters probably did NOT know what the rules were.
