You can enter them directly via the numeric keypad. Hold down the ALT key and press the corresponding number of the character on the number keypad, do not use the numbers above the alpha keys. Also, you have to be using a font that supports the special characters. Use the Character Map from Windows to see the codes. For example, to get a ® symbol in Arial, hold down the ALT key and press 0174, and then release the ALT key.
