>As in, why reinvent the wheel? VFP does not have a word processor either, so we can automate Word, and so on. A lot of people don't realize that for some things (like financial or statistical functions or maybe spell checking) we can use Excel or Word without making them visible, just using them as extensions. It's called reuse :-)

Alex;

I do not understand the meaning of your response. If it is of any importance would you please explain it? You could create a long list of features Excel, VB and VFP share and those that are lacking or different in each product. As you have added Word, that makes the list more complex. Would you care to add any more products from Microsoft or any other vendor? Perhaps different operating systems should be included also. Do not forget to add any thing else I may have forgotten that may cross your mind.

In attempting to discuss IRR, I brought up the point that "VFP does not have all the financial functions needed in the real world". My first financial application was with FoxBase back in the 1980's and I had to write my own functions, which are commonly available as a part of Excel and VB today. With the introduction of Visual FoxPro, etc., writing applications and sharing resources from other applications is a reality that I have enjoyed.

I do not consider wanting functions available within Visual FoxPro be “reinventing the wheel”. If that is the case you should be criticizing Microsoft for having developed products with the same or similar features. The feature set of each Microsoft product is not always different and VFP is just another tool. Perhaps what is needed is one product that does it all or each product designed with no features duplicated in any other product.

In case you missed it I was discussing availability of functions within Visual FoxPro and not applications, which I consider Word to be. As an example I am not questioning why Excel does not have a Word processor. I am just following the logic of your response but in reality I am not interested in the relationships you have brought up.

Otherwise have a nice day.

Tom
