If I may...

I suspect that ken is using 'democratic' as a reference to the Democratic party, as opposed to the more general meaning of the word. I am a member of the 'catholic' church but not the 'Catholic' church, would be another example.

Democracy perhaps as in the common understanding of 'one man, one vote'?
