I have been developing an app to do a lot of this, and I just changed from calling the SndPlaySnd API to the multimedia control interface API. If you use the class viewer to look in the multimedia vcx, you can see how the class is implemented.

I have heard that you can set the bell to a wave file and just call the bell, but I haven't tested it.

Set bell to c:\windows\media\chimes.wav
