Returning .F. or 0 (zero) keeps the focus in the combobox.
The Valid Event is pretty well explained in the help file.
One thing the help doesn't say (which I thought it did at one point) is that you cannot set focus to another control from within the Valid event or any method downstream of the Valid event.
Or is this question about something else?
