I don't know what's wrong with your code...
I have done a test and it work on my machine...

cmd.CommandType = adCmdText
cmd.CommandText = "UPDATE tblClientTemp SET DocReceived = 1"
cmd.Execute Options:=adAsyncExecute

I'm using ADO 2.1
Maybe someone else could help on this one??
