Doug;

My favorite philosophers are Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche. One of Nietzsche beliefs is the “Oberman”. To translate the meaning from German to English Oberman means over man – the boss – refered to by some as the “Superman”. According to the Oberman Theory, “laws are made by the weak to protect them from the strong”.

This might be a good starting point for a discussion about politics. Are laws necessary? For whom? What should be allowed to be placed into the form of a law? Local, State and Federal laws? Laws govern, restrict, protect, regulate and much more. If an individual or 49.999% of the population disagrees with a law does that make it wrong?

Perhaps the ideal perspective of a so called conservative would be best described as Pre Historic man. No laws and social interaction consisting of clubbing anyone to death who gets in your path. Every man for himself! A true Oberman. A liberal is therefore someone (a weak person)who wants law and order to allow members of society to live together. These laws will have to regulate certain elements of society thus requiring the individual to forfeit actions that will thus be considered anti social. Over time the definition of conservative and liberal change to meet the perceived needs of society. Sometimes laws are made to correct a social injustice and other time’s laws are made to punish. There is no ideal state and thank God we are allowed to express our thoughts.

This conversation would be much more fun given in person.

Tom
