>The single most common cause of Illegal opreation errors is a conflict with the video driver software being used on the machine. Illegal operation is comming from the OS and not VFP, it indicates that VFP has tried to reference a memory location that some other software has locked. Video drivers are famous for not respecting the memory space of other applications that are running. They do this to speed upo performance of the video by bypassing the the OS's memory allocation routines and grabbing their own memory.

The Illegal Operation error is a Win95 error, not a VFP error. I had one portable with frequent crashes and errors of this type which turned out to have a cracked (from the factory) motherboard!!! A second portable has been much better behaved since I changed the video driver and the other 2 have never had the problem.
Incidently, I was getting the Illegal Operation error in M$Word, Netscape, Eudora, and Lotus cc:mail as well as VFP. I agree that it is absurd and frustrating that drivers do this sort of thing -- what finally made me realise that it was the video driver was that the portable worked fine as a portable, but blew up when docked and using a 17" monitor. However -- flaming and blaming do nothing except increasing the flamer's blood pressure.
I'll agree that M$ is not perfect, and both Win95 and VFP have bugs. HOWEVER -- software and OSs in general are much better behaved and a lot more complex and feature rich these days than they were 5 - 10 years ago.

My prescription: check out the video driver, check out the hardware, take 2 chill pills and relax....

A bipolar theory does not neatly describe a continuum.
