Wrong! Copyright law in the US is federal law. The states cannot contradict what the federal law says.

Right, but according to lawyers I have spoken with, the exact wording and circumstances of contracts, and the degree/manner in which they can be proven applicable to intellectual property/copyright issues, do indeed vary from state to state at this point. I agree (or at least, I have no reason to disagree) with your comment regarding copyright law. Contracts are something else though.

I should point out, though, these were discussions I had concerning a full-time position, not a contractor position. There were provisions in the statement I was asked to sign which might have stood up in some states but definitely had not stood up in others. So again, the variation is less about copyright law, and more about the circumstances of contracts (which in this case pertain to those laws).

My main point to Kevin still stands. At least here in the US, this is not a fully and firmly formed area of the law at this point, and I was just cautioning him against accepting any precise posted answer to a very general question.
