>>Thanks for reminding me of the word "hypocrite". I thought I was just taking your advice & pointing out the potential problems in the solution suggested by someone. If you don't remember your comment to me, then I'll remind you :

>You don't seem to know the meaning of the word. You say one thing, do another. I don't.

Must be missing something here - what do I say & not do.

>>Second, we're not operating in a vacuum here. The original poster was not and will not be the only person to read it. Someone else, with less experience and knowledge may someday come along, and take a look, and might some dreadful design decisions based simply on the problem and the solution. It was, and is important to point out not only the solutions to problems, but any potential dangers that might exist with a given solution. In this case, the potential for later problems is quite large.

>By insulting someone? Sorry, doesn't wash. Rather than saying that there was a mistake or other error or oversight in the code, you indulge in character assasination. Rather, than posting the correct solution, you insult.

Same technique as Ed regularly uses to people who post questions which, to him at least, are trivial. As to the post to which the above quote came, I didn't see you suggesting anything better - all you did was criticise.

>There was no indication that you were attempting a humorous jibe at Ed. No emoticon, no < g > or < s >. You don't have to explain humor to me (of all people), but you really need a lesson in appropriate on-line correspondence.

No point in humour, if it has to be spelled out. I've often found that the self-opinionated, know-it-all, bullying types of the world, are the ones who cannot take even the slightest jibe at themselves. Maybe it just insecurity. It doesn't look too good when somebody who knows nothing finds a fault with somebody who knows everything.

It seems that is is perfectly OK for a small clique of people, who have a rather grossly inflated idea of their own abilities, to criticise people outside of that small group. It is then a different matter, when someone outside of that group criticises someone within the group.

At the end of the day, the code had potentially catastrophic side-effects, which were not pointed out by Ed, either because he didn't realise (in which case he needed to be told) or he knew & just didn't bother (which is completely unacceptable). I really don't care who he is, how good he is (or thinks he is), if the code stinks, then I will point it out. If he feels insulted by the manner with which I did it, then he really ought to reassess the manner in which he replies to other people.
