Though I don't see any spaces in the text you provided, this might be the problem:
m s comes before ma. I don't know what kind of sorting you want, but the problem to me seems to be with your data. If the data is name and initials, you'd sort by a combination of these fields, and make sure initials are entered always without spaces, or remove them before you show sorted results.
