In Windows, the most reliable way to achieve this, is to install a "Generic Text Only" printer driver. I also usually set one of these up so that it prints to file instead of a port.

These instructions are for NT4 - but I imagine they are very similiar for other Windows platforms:
Go to Start -> Settings -> Printers
Select "Add Printer"
Printer will be managed by "My Computer" click next
Scroll to bottom of list of Ports and check "File" click next
From Manufacturers: select "Generic" (type ge), then in "Printers:" select "Generic / Text Only"
Then select the TXTONLY.DLL driver from your Windows CD or ...\i386 folder.
