I've run up against this too, but I mostly have Remote Views where (as you said) it's easy to update the data type.

Have you tried using the same DBSetProp() command on the SPT cursor? I haven't tried this, so it's just a guess, but it would be

DBSetProp('MyCursor', 'Field', 'DataType', "D")
