Hi Bruce,

>>I'm telling you the signs are clear - signals are being sent to Gore from his own people now to call it off. They want to win the House and Senate in two years. It's a very smart political move on their part IMO.
>
>I don't think the signals are very clear at the moment, Doug, though they may well be within a few days if Gore popular support drops off further. But right now, it's nearly a win-win situation for Democrats in Congress. Many are upset at some recent events such as the Dade recount stopage, and the refusal of Harris to allow the Palm Beach recount - before this, they didn't care a lot. The congressional Dems have fairly solid party-faithful support for backing Gore just now, and very few complaints from constituents.

Well, here's another link for folks to look at: http://cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,252872-412,00.shtml

This one's from CBS - not some 'right wing foaming-at-the-mouth conservative' site. <g>

As far as I can see Ms. Harris simply obeyed the Florida Supreme Court in certifying Sunday night. Those folks who whined about needing five extra hours to count the last 1000 ballots probably forgot to tell folks they took Thursday off. Whoops. <g>

>
>Yet, as you note, if/when Bush is president, the Dems will very likely take over congress in 2 years if cards are played well. So, for many Dems right now, they are content for at least a few days to back Gore, knowing that the future bodes fairly bright either way this goes.

Well, I think that for the Dems that a two year strategy would be best. Mind you I think the Repubs shouldn't let them demagogue the issue (ie. grow a spine <g>) but I do see that as a good strong strategy for the Dems.

>
>In a sense, the Repubs are actually nearer to a lose-lose situation, IMO, because they've become so much more worked up about this election. The Dems have less to lose because they don't take it quite as seriously - and because they're already mildly happy with congressional gains, and the prospect of even more gains later. In the catbird seat, they are, at least for a few days.

I dunno... I think that what is at stake here is greater than Republican or Democrat actually. I think it's about right & wrong and personal responsibility. I do believe that this comes from a strong belief in God and on that count as a Christian I fault the church primarily for trying to do spiritual tasks in very non-spiritual ways. That and the sovereignity of God and His plans for mankind. <g> I know others will disagree but to be honest this paralyzation of our government - combined with what is going on right now in Israel kind of makes me want to reread Ezekial chapters 37-39.

Big things are a goin on and most folks are asleep in the light.
Best,
