In the process of re-building my linux mail server I've come across a problem I'm sure everyone has encountered at some point. I thought I knew how to deal with it but obviously not. Perhaps someone could shed some light on this for me?

I've successfully installed Linux twice on an old 486 and am installing it for a 3rd time.

This time, however, I can't get past LI at boot time. My understanding is that this is because /boot is beyond the 1024th cylinder. Now here's my problem : I used fdisk to create the /boot partition and I know that it only spans cylinders 1 thru 10.

I've tried a number of installs with partitions for /usr /home/ /var and /(root) and also a setup with a /boot and /(root with everything else). I've install LILO to the MBR and also to the 1st sector of the /boot partition with no success with either option.

At this point I'm ready to give up - my hair is already torn out and I'm about to start tearing other people's hair out! Any and all suggestions very welcome!
