>If one turns off scanning when opening or running a file, what does that mean with respect to opening e-mail attachments?

Well, if it's set to scan upon Creating or Downloading files, seems to me it would scan the attachments as they land on your machine.

However, there are other virus protection settings that deal specifically with email, and I'd make sure they were implemented. IMO, the two easiest virus entry points are email and downloaded files. Not to many people shlepp floppies around any more -- most everything's shared by email attachments or FTP anymore (though CD writers are replacing floppy drives). IAC, if the files are scanned when Created or Downloaded AND email virus protection is set, that is likely to cover the vast majority of the virus entry points.
