Hmmm...I don't have time today to do a bunch of poking around, but I can tell you that I get this error mainly for two reasons. One is that the user shut it down while my code was running. That isn't the case here. The other reason is that the server is too busy to answer. Try stepping through your code with Word visible -- sometimes you can see that there's a contention of some sort, or in this case, I'm thinking a dialog may be active. If it's waiting for a user to input some data, it can't respond to an automation request.

Cool! Do you get here often? I was just in Greensboro the other night, at the Coliseum for a great (but physical!) for the Duke-Illinois game. Greensboro holds fond memories for me, most of them ACC Tournament-related!
