The patches are essential if you're running on fastish CPUs, but
there may be an NT-particular problem as well, I think.

I found that I got errors similar to this on NT if there were errors arising when the config.fpw file was parsed.

For example, a config.fpw had a line

sortwork=c:\tmpfiles

and unless the directory c:\tmpfiles actually existed, I got these errors on startup. Creating the directory
removed the problem.
